Finca La Fany is a family inheritance that dates back to the early 1900’s. It was first established by Fabio Morán and then passed on through the generations from father to son. The beautiful farm is located on top of the Apaneca-Illamatepec Mountain Range, 2 miles from the city of Apaneca. It received its name because of one of Rafael’s ancestors called Fany.
In the early 1990’s, Rafael received the opportunity to buy this great family heirloom from one of his aunts. Immediately, Rafael jumped at the opportunity and became the sole proprietor and manager of the farm. Originally, the farm was 100% Bourbon but Rafael has now been experimenting with new varieties and increasing the number of trees of each. Even before Rafael had his hands on the farm, La Fany already had a big name in the region for the quality of its coffee and productivity. Because of this, Rafael has and the family always will maintain the production of our Red Bourbon trees to be our #1 crop.
Rafael is very committed to this farm as being the fifth generation in the family to have control over this land. One of his most proudest moments was in 2005 when La Fany Red Bourbon achieved the 4th place in the COE. He recognizes this moment as a commemoration to all his predecessors.
Over the years, Rafael has been focusing on the care of the environment and has been trying different ecological techniques to adapt in the farm. One of these was the most successful of all. He was able to get his hands on Red Californian Earthworms which he placed in buckets with coffee pulp while he began the construction of bigger tanks while starting to reproduce the worms. Once the first tanks were finished, they were filled up with coffee pulp and the worms were inserted. The worms digest the pulp and their leftovers is soil very rich in nutrients. This practice is called “Vermicomposting”. The vermicompost is then applied in the coffee plantation as a supplement to chemical fertilizers. The worm pee is also collected, as the tanks were built at an angle through the use of a drainage. Worm pee is also very rich in nutrients, so we use this as a key part in the mixture for foliar applications.
Now, Rafael is switching his focus to renovations. In 2017, 13,000 new Pacamara trees were planted. This year, 40,000 new seedlings were planted at the nursery, composed of Red Bourbon, Orange Bourbon, Pacamara, Geisha, Yellow Icatu, and Yellow Caturra. These will be planted at the farm in 2019.
Rafael is continuously looking for different ways in which he can improve the farms quality and productivity, reduce the use of chemicals, help the neighboring communities by providing a steady income to their households and providing them with a fresh water supply at no charge. He really cares for the environment and for all the year-round workers and temporary workers.
