Farm History:
In 1999 I started buying small plots gradually. My mother gave us a small plot to each child so we could work it. When the purchase of plots began, they had weeds and we started planting coffee little by little. The old plots have been renewed, seeking to improve production, following indications by the extensionists of the Coffee Growers Committee.
For me coffee means a very exquisite, delicious drink, as long as it is a very good one, as there are bad quality drinks, in which taste is unpleasant. Coffee and its good quality make me feel proud of my farm.
I fertilize three times a year, in January, May and September. Flowering occurs in January, February and March, and ripening, 9 months later, more or less. For the rains to be useful, they must fall in February. When it rains too much, production is hit, and when there is excess of sun, coffee also gets a little damaged.
Coffee is harvested in the day and when reaching the hopper, it is immediately pulped. Fermentation lasts on average 24 hours. For wet processing, we use a normal tank (traditional method). It is then washed and goes to the drying beds.
I end my work day at about 7:00 pm and go to rest, I like to watch TV. My favorite place to relax is the living room.
My greatest ambition for the farm is to continue producing quality and sustainable coffee. In the future I’d like to extend the area. With coffee production itself, I want to save money and buy more area. My idea is to plant the Castillo variety (resistant to rust and better climatically adapted). I want to plant more trees if possible, if there is any help to facilitate this.
My favorite team is my family and workers; they are the most important people at my farm. Some relatives are supported by subsidies (Sisben). I have 2 permanent workers and 7 pickers join work during the harvest. The pickers normally are my neighbors, people coming from elsewhere, my husband and I. I pay my workers per kilo. As a social project, I’d like to see my workers having benefits.
