Lot#20 Finca Altamira
Producer: Hernández y Gálvez S.A
FINCA ALTAMIRA is located on the slopes of the Barva volcano, specifically in the community of Buena Vista, San Pablo. FINCA ALTAMIRA belongs to Mr. Adrián Hernández Johansson and his wife Gerardina Gálvez Pavón. In 1935 it was acquired by Mr. Ancelmo Hernández Aguilar as "coffee farm" and since then it has belonged to four generations of the Hernández family who have maintained it as a coffee plantation. The current owners bought it from their relatives, the previous owners. The total area of the farm is 8 hectares, of which 7 hectares are dedicated to the cultivation of coffee. The rest of the farm corresponds to protected areas on the banks of the Mancarrón River, internal roads and facilities.
The farm is divided into twenty-one (21) plots planted with Caturra, Catuaí and Obatá varieties. Recently other materials have been introduced such as the Central American, Geisha, and Typical "Java" hybrid with the purpose of producing very high quality cup coffees.
From 2009, a program to renovate the coffee farm on the farm began, which is currently 80% complete. It has an average annual production of 300 quintals of cherries, equivalent to about 300 quintals of green coffee. The agronomic management of the plantation follows the most up-to-date recommendations of the technicians of the Instituto del Café de Costa Rica (ICAFE), the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Costa Rica and of COOPELIBERTAD, seeking the best coffee quality and being socially responsible and friendly with the environment.
It is a model farm in the application of practices for soil management and conservation, shade management and nature protection. It has the certificates: RAINFOREST ALLIANCE, FAIR TRADE and is following the recommendations of the NAMA CAFÉ program to which the national coffee sector is committed. The agricultural tasks are carried out by two permanent employees and during the harvest season there are between twenty and twenty-five collaborators in harvesting tasks. As associates of the Cooperativa de Caficultores de Heredia LIBERTAD, R.L. (COOPELIBERTAD) the coffee produced by FINCA ALTAMIRA is processed in the cooperative's agroindustrial facilities.
