Farm: Jesus Mountain
Producer: Jesus Mountain Coffee Company S.A
* Farm History:
Jesus Mountain Coffee Company is the culmination of more than 60 years of friendship, travel and adventure. David, Miguel and Bing-lifelong friends from Stockton, California-worked in Nicaragua during the tumultuous 1970s, after David completed his volunteer work with the Peace Corps in Nicaragua. Although the friends had to leave the country in the wake of the 1979 revolution, David and his wife and Nicaraguan children returned to the country in the 1990s. The friends took advantage of the return of David and his family to the Nueva Segovia region, as well as the combined experience of the three in agriculture and development, to found Jesus Mountain Coffee Company Nicaragua in 1999.
The friends felt motivated to acquire land in El Cerro de Jesús for the desire to produce quality coffee and preserve the unique environment and community that is home to El Cerro. The founders immediately ceased the slash-and-burn activity at that time omnipresent in the land that they were gradually acquiring, and began negotiations to establish the private nature reserve with MARENA. Its initial activities also included the construction of access roads and bridges, an elementary school that currently houses about 30 students, as well as a church for the community of El Cerro and its neighbors.
The farm has suffered high and low, product of both Mother Nature and the coffee market. These lessons have produced improvements in terms of technical management in the field and in the wet mill, and have led the farm to focus on specialty coffee as it is a more stable market-although more demanding-than the commercial market. Despite the obstacles encountered throughout the history of Jesus Mountain, the founders have never given up their dream of a sustainable farm that produces the best quality coffee in an ecologically responsible manner, with a serious commitment to the development and welfare of its workers and the neighboring community.
