Farmer’s Biography:
I was born in Garzón, Huila, on September 8, 1951. My family migrated to the Laboyos Valley, where I remember a very quiet, happy childhood in a traditional peasant environment. I grew up with an uncle until the age of 15 and then I went back to live with my mother and siblings. I’m the eldest of all, I’m 63 years old. Now they are also coffee growers. My favorite food is the “sancocho de gallina” (chicken stew). I am a Colombia ’s fan, my favorite place is my farm in the Pitalito municipality, in the Cerritos and Ingalí rural districts. I like a lot Vicente Fernández’s songs. I play billiards with my friends at a recreational level. In my youth I dreamed of having a farm and being the best coffee farmer in the region. I’m not yet the best, but I strive for improving day after day. I have not read books, but magazines on technical advances for coffee growing published by the National Coffee Research Center (Cenicafé). I like programs about the country and technological advances.
37 years ago I met a beautiful woman named Enriqueta Rosas Tejada, who is now my wife and my unconditional support since then. I share all my achievements with her. We have three children: the eldest, Óscar Alirio, is 34 years old and a trader in Pitalito; the following, Sonia Liliana, is 31 and an agricultural technician, and the youngest, Viviana Sofía, is 27, graduated as a business manager and lives in Bogotá. I also have two beautiful little grandchildren: Karen Julieth and Matías.
The farms of my family coffee business, Miraflores and La Esperanza, are located in the rural districts of Cerritos and Ingalí. Our farm coffees are sustainable, with Rainforest Alliance, UTZ and FLO certifications. We comply with strict codes of conduct very satisfactorily, such as, for example, environmental conservation practices. We don’t hire minors and give a fair treatment to our workers.
