Overview

Our cooperative was founded 1983 and it is currently comprised of 65 members out which 35 are women and 30 are men. We are all producers coffee and basic grains, around a year ago 6 members of the coop initiated the production of organic honey and soon we will be 30 that will be producing organic honey. Most of our members have had to search to alternative productions for sources of economic income since the winter in our area are not that good, there is a long dead period (no work in coffee) between one harvest and another. The winning members of 8vo place in the Cup of the Excellence are: Maria Gomez, Luis A. Vasquez, Mario Torrez and Santos Martinez, all we live in the community of Apante, San Lucas, Madriz, region where our properties are located. The natural condition for growing coffee are abundant for the exception of rain, we have beautiful fertile earth, plenty of shade, and very high altitude to produce high quality coffees. Our way of life is very difficult in our area, but with the aid of God we are fighting and making an effort to reach very high goal that we set for ourselves. This is the second time that we participate in the Cup of the Excellence and we have won important rankings like 4th and 8th place. In addition, we are also grateful for the support and motivation that Prodecoop has given us; they have also done a great job in monitoring the quality of our coffee. This prize in addition to being an achievement product of the joint efforts of many cooperative members, technicians, and our families, is also an opportunity to payoff some economic debts that we have product of the economic coffee crises that we experimented in the past years.
