Murundo Coffee Washing Station Kivubelt coffee
Murundo CWS is one of two wet mills owned by Teuscher Invest Ltd. The company produce, process and export fully washed specialty coffee under the trade mark Kivubelt coffee. The story behind how Kivubelt coffee came to be processed in Murundo CWS can be described as one of a very fortunate circumstance. In fact, Kivubelt coffee estate consist of three sites with more than 90’000 trees. It is situated 20 km from Murundo CWS.
In 2014 two years after planting, the farm produce its very first coffee crop. However the estate did not have a CWS to process the cherries. The better Solution was to temporarily rent a ready to operate CWS, that’s how Kivubelt coffee ended up being process in Murundo. And because the volume of the cherries from the estate was not enough compare to the capacity of the facility, the management decided to buy cherries from smallholders farmers located in Mahembe where Murundo CWS is located for efficiency purpose.
What was supposed to be a temporary solution evolves into a long term relationship between more than 500 smallholder farmer families of Mahembe and the owners of Murundo CWS who bought the wet mill in 2016. The quality and the potential of the cherries brought to the CWS were exceptional and met one of the main goals that Kivubelt coffee has set to achieve. That goal is to bring to the consumers an outstanding cup of coffee. A cup that is truly memorable.
To ensure quality consistency, the staff at Murundo CWS make sure to explain and show the farmers on the field how and when to pick the ripe cherries. At the CWS the selection of the cherries is subject to a rigorous quality control. Only ruby red fully ripe cherries are accepted after being floated in water.
Then the cherries are pulped following by dry and wet fermentation processing of about twelve hours. After that the coffee beans are fully washed with clean spring water. Afterward the fully washed parchment beans are slowly sun-dried and hand sorted several times. When the beans reach a moisture content of 12% they are put in bags to be stored in a dry, well ventilate warehouse.
Since 2014 Murundo CWS owners and their team have become very active members of the Mahembe community. They participate regularly in community service such as Umuganda; organize capacity building sessions with the smallholders farmers to improve coffee quality consistency.
In December 2017, Kivubelt coffee provides an additional payment of 5 Rwfr/kg as a bonus to all the farmers who brought their cherries at the Murundo CWS that year.
On the social front, Kivubelt coffee owners and their team members are very aware of the vulnerability of life in their rural community that’s why the company pledged and provided health care for the 2018 full year for 100 most vulnerable people of Mahembe, chosen by the local authorities.
Murundo WCS has become a place where Teuscher Invest Ltd through Kivubelt coffee and the smallholder farmers of Mahembe are able to process and produce extraordinary high end specialty coffee to offer to the world.
